    • ANSWER:
      Hello There!

      The best thing you can do to get pricing/information is to call Kindel directly or write them an email with your questions and photos. They may not give you pricing, instead they may refer you to a store that carries their furniture near you if you're looking to purchase. Be sure to give them style number you're looking at.

      Be prepared that they not make that style any longer if it was made in 1981.

      Good Luck!

    Just don't know much about it.

      I don't know what a ups is and you won't be uploading. You'll register your device to your Amazon account and you can use either an Amazon gift card or a debit/credit card to make purchases. There's a "Manage Your Kindle" page where you can choose the default location where your purchases will be sent. If you don't have any other device with app or the desktop app on your computer, the default will automatically be that Kindle and purchases will be sent directly to it when it's connected to the internet via wi-fi or 3G.

  7. QUESTION:
    Which one, a Nook or a Kindel?
    I've been doing research, I want something different for Christmas, and I'm fascinated with these things. I know that there is a slight difference, like a Nook is in color and ten dollars more as the Kindel is not in color and ten dollars less. I can't decide, what have you heard about these? A complete waste of money?

    • ANSWER:
      - Original e-Ink Nook allows to lend books for 2 weeks to friends or to your other devices that run B&N app. Barnes & Noble allows (when you walk in with the Nook to B&N store) to read any available eBook for free while in the store via free provided in the store Wi-Fi. With Nook, while in BN store you get exclusive articles from top authors, and great offers including cafe treats and unique deals.
      - Nook Color is better as a color e-Reader than Kindle simply because it has color and Kindle is black and white. Content that greatly benefits from color - such as kids books and magazines - looks much better and sharper on Nook Color's screen. Nook Color is better as an e-Reader in general than iPad. It has a new generation screen which is anti-glare coated and is better performing in sunlight than iPad's. Also, as it's smaller in size than iPad, the text appears sharper on Nook's screen. Also it has 12,000 (more soon) kids books that are built as a game with feedback.
      Overall, Nook Color is more than e-Reader as you can also watch video and use Android applications on it. It's a hybrid device, much more than just an e-Reader but not a full tablet as it doesn't have a camera. If all you want is to read novels, Kindle (or the original e-Ink Nook) might be better for you. If you want something more from your device at half of the price of iPad or Galaxy tab, then Nook Color is your best bet.
      - Nook (unlike Kindle) can be used for library ebooks.
      - Nook (unlike Kindle) can be used for renting text-ebooks.

  8. QUESTION:
    Which is better, the Sony Reader or the Kindel?
    I am thinking of buying an avid reader I know one for Christmas. When this person goes on a trip somewhere, a bag of books accompanies them. I figured that a small machine would be easier to carry around then a 50 lb bag of books.
    So which one works better in your opinion?
    Can you provide me with websites going into detail about these pieces of technology?

    AHHH!!!!!!!!!! THANK YOU SO MUCH :D

    • ANSWER:
      I'm an avid reader and a Kindle 2 owner as well. I love my Kindle 2 so much. Yeah, an ebook reader must be a perfect gift for your friend.

      Between the Kindle and the Sony Reader, I'll suggest you to go for the Kindle instead of Sony. The Kindle is better because it has free wireless and text-to-speech function. There are more ebooks you can find available for the Kindle, and books on the Kindle are quite a lot cheaper too. There are some good comparison between them here:

      http://www.amazon.com/gp/redirect.html?ie=UTF8&location=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.com%2Freview%2FR3ULAFVHBGYVQP%3Fie%3DUTF8%26ref%255F%3Dcm%255Fcr%255Frdp%255Fperm&tag=moreinfo-po-20&linkCode=ur2&camp=1789&creative=390957

      http://www.speedreaderxreview.com/kindle-2-0-vs-sony-reader-prs-700bc-comparison

      And in case you don't know, Amazon has recently put a price slash on the Kindle 2, and it adds in international wireless access and native PDF support... So take the chance if you want it.

      Hope it helps :)

  9. QUESTION:
    Does anyone know about a car repair manual called Kindel?
    The book is supposed to have every car & how to fix them?
    ~~~I would really love to get a response, anything would help.~~
    (= =) (;
    • ANSWER:
      I would suggest to go with the Haynes or Chilton repair manuals. Never heard of Kindel before. Or much better, try to search up some good auto repair sites in order to compensate your needs without spending that much for a manual. But either way, it's up until to your decisions.
But i don't have the money to just go out and buy one i need to save so i would like an affordable one but not lacking in any way. so are there certain ones that are better,ones i should stay away from. thanks for any help you can give me.
    • ANSWER:
      Buy the Nook Color!! You can root it and turn it into a 0 Android tablet. You can get 1000's of apps from the android marketplace and extra storage. Plus you can have the kindle app on there as well :)
      Just go to this site to get the SD card that has it running for you! It already has many popular apps installed too, such as Angry Birds, Netflix, Words with Friends, and more!
      www.Nook2Android.com
      Has just as much as an IPad, Tablets, and Laptops, except it is half the cost!
      It will cost you about 0 for the Nook at most any store (when you factor in taxes for in store purchases, vs shipping for online purchases). They sell them everywhere, from walmart, to B&N, to Amazon.com. As far as books, they can be free up to depending on the book..I think the average is between - though. They do have this sharing program though where you can "share" books with friends :) That is free once you have a few books to share!
    • ANSWER:
  34. QUESTION:
    Kindel, nook, Ereader? What to choose!?
    I was wondering if I could get on the web with either a kindle, nook, ereader, or any other portable reading devise of some sort.
    • ANSWER:
      Well if you an ereader, I suggest you get the new Nook Simple Touch. They made a lot of good upgrades and I think it is much better than the Kindle 3. If you want more of a tablet and an ereader combined, there is always the iPad (even though it isn't an ereader) or the Nook Color which is classified as an ereader. To get the Nook Simple Touch go to:
  35. QUESTION:
    Questions about the Kindel?
    1) Do you think it's worth the money?
    2) Should I get the 'old' one, or the new 3G one?
    3) What are the main features?
    4) I am thinking of doing english at uni in a year, do you think hard copies of the books would be better than the Kindel?
    Thanks :)
    • ANSWER:
      1) Yes, it is worth the money. Better then paper books.
      2) There is no such thing as the "old" one. The newest kindle has either one with free 3G, or WiFi. If you are going to have internet access via WiFi when you use it, then get the cheaper WiFi. If you would like to get books anywhere, hotspot or not, on the road, or wherever, get the 3G.
      3) The main features are reading a book in whatever font size, shape, spacing you want. You can put music, browse the web, download books in 5 seconds, and use specially designed apps. It can be read in direct sunlight, no eyestrain, has a month long battery, and holds thousands of books. Good page turn speed (faster than turning a paper one by hand), and can look up any word in any book instantly, without leaving the page you are on. It reads out loud, and passages, words, and sentences can be highlighted and saved. Notes can be made anywhere in the book.
      4) Because of all of these features, a Kindle would be much better then paper, although a few books might have to be in paper.
  38. QUESTION:
    how does a kindel work like the kind with books?
    i know you read books on them or something like that. after you buy the kindel how do you get books on it and do you have to pay for the books you get to go on it? also if you have one ............... what are pros and cons about it and any thing you think someone buying one should know? thanks
    is there any way to download free books on the kindle
    like you know how you can download free songs on your mp3 player can you do that with the kindle? where is the cheepest place to get them?
    • ANSWER:
      Your Kindle will be linked to your amazon.com account. On the Kindle device there is access to the Kindle Store, where you can browse books, read reviews, download samples and purchase books. If you purchase the book, it is charged to the credit card that is linked to your amazon.com account, and the book is wirelessly downloaded to the Kindle. You do not pay for the wireless service, but you do pay for the book. The prices on Amazon vary, from free to to or .
      If you are not in the U.S., or are outside of a wireless area (it uses Sprint's network), then there is a USB cord that comes with it that you can use to transfer titles from your computer to the Kindle device. You can also transfer e-books from other websites to the Kindle using the USB cord.
      I own the first generation Kindle, which has a removable battery and a media card slot so that you can expand the memory. The new, second generation Kindle has a built-in battery and there is no media card slot, although the memory on the 2nd gen. is larger than the memory on the 1st gen. The 2nd gen. also has a feature that, when activated, will cause the Kindle to read out loud. I haven't actually heard it, but from what I've read it is a very mechanical sounding voice. The Kindle also plays MP3s and has a built-in browser. I don't use either of those features so I cannot comment on them.
      Pros: any books you purchase from Amazon are stored on Amazon's media library site, so that if your Kindle gets lost or stolen you can re-download the books to a new device so long as the new device is registered to that same account. This also allows you to swap out titles between the Kindle and the media library so that you can manage the memory allotment. The Kindle remembers the location you are reading in each book on the device, so you never have to worry about losing your place in the book. You can adjust the size of the text. I believe there are 5 or 6 different sizes to choose from. There is a built-in dictionary. There is a search function that allows you to search for words or phrases that appear in any of the titles that are on the Kindle device.
      Cons: Kindle users cannot share books, unless they are registered to the same Amazon account, i.e. if you want to share books with a spouse or friend, both of the Kindles must be registered to the same account.
      Overall, I love my Kindle. If you have an iPhone or an iPod touch there is a free application that you can download to the apple device that will allow the apple device to wirelessly synch to the Kindle so that you can read books between the two devices. Very cool if you do not want to carry the Kindle around with you all the time. Just whip out the iPhone or iTouch and start reading. When you want to switch back to the Kindle then you tell the devices to synch and you can start reading on the Kindle exactly where you left off from reading on the apple device.
  39. QUESTION:
    Which is better Nook or Kindel ?
    Which one has better screens and about how much do u think they are ?? Also price of book would help best awnser 10 points thank you
    • ANSWER:
      Hi, Vedya Kaya, Kindle 3 is lighter and has a better screen and battery than Kindle 2. It's not a touchscreen, it's still e-Ink black & white screen. You should understand the limitations of e-Ink eReaders - they are limited to be black & white for now they "blink" at each ebook’s page turn, they're not too good for web browsing, they need external light source for reading when dark, and they cannot handle videos.
      There's also similar Nook eReader devices available from Barnes & Noble that have a lot of advantages over Kindles such as:
      1. Nook allows to lend Nook books for two weeks to friends and family or share with your other devices that run B&N app (PC, MAC, Android phones, Apple iPhone, iPod and iPad, etc.) Barnes & Noble allows (when you walk in with the Nook to B&N store) to read any available eBook for free while in the store via free provided in the store Wi-Fi. With Nook, while in BN store you get exclusive articles from top authors, and great offers including cafe treats and unique deals.
      2. Nook (unlike Kindle) can be used for library ebooks.
      3. Nook (unlike Kindle) can be used for renting text-ebooks.
      There's over a million of free public ebooks as well as over a million of ebooks that you need to pay for available through Barnes & Noble eBook store. Prices are generally much lower than for physical books.
      If you're willing to spend a bit more, you could get Nook Color from Barnes & Noble which is a hybrid Android device, much more than just an e-Reader but not a full tablet as it doesn't have a camera (but iPad also doesn’t have one.) Even though Nook Color has LCD touchscreen, it's a new generation screen which is anti-glare coated and is better performing in sunlight and produces less glare all of which are dooming reading on iPad. Also, the screen is amazing and readable/viewable at wide angles.
      Nook Color has several apps that already come with the device (Pandora Internet radio, QuickOffice, etc.) Also, Barnes & Noble recently released Nook SDK and Nook Developer platform that will allow most of the existing 100,000 Android apps be ported to it. You can use the Social Settings screen to link your NOOKcolor to your Facebook account and your Twitter account. You can also import all your contacts from your Google Gmail account. Once you have linked to Facebook and Twitter and set up email contacts, you can lend and borrow books, recommend books, and share favorite quotes with your friends.
      If all you want is to read novels, Kindle the original e-Ink Nook might be better for you. If you want something more from your device (color graphs and charts of college text books, childrens books, photos and videos, web sites in full color) at half of the price of iPad or Galaxy tab, then Nook Color is your best bet.
    What are major stages in Siddhartha's life in the book Siddhartha by Hesse?
(like learning love from Kamala/being in the town would be one).
If you are intending to hand this over as a gift, and intend to have some books installed on it : Buy from best-buy. The Geek squad will get you of where you would like to be. Novels cost about 95 cents if you are online. about 1.50 if there is a need to download of the whole novel at one particular time.
    which is better??
    im looking for alot of space, for it to connect to the computer, and be able to have audio
    • ANSWER:
      In short:
      > Don't go for Nook Color. It's using backlight screen like computer screen, and is difficult to our eyes. Just not suitable for reading purpose.
      > Choose the Nook if you want to be:
      - Able to borrow ebooks from library to your ebook reader
      - Able to read books in epub format (without need of conversion) on your ebook reader
      > Choose the Kindle if you want to be:
      - Able to have free 3G wireless access
      - Able to download books and use 3G wireless even you're outside of the United States
      - Able to have text-to-speech function to read books to you like audio books
    whats an amazon kindel?
    ive seen the adverts and ive just seen it on AMAZON (: and i wanna know
    i think its like a book and why is it so expensive whats so good about it
    • ANSWER:
      The Kindle is a device that can hold E-Books. But unlike computer E-Books, The Kindle has what's called an E-Ink Display. that means that the screen looks a lot like a real book. It does not emit any light, like a computer or a TV does. It can hold 3,500 books on it and can download books straight to the device through wifi
    Should I get an E-Book Reader? If so, which kind?
    I'm debating whether or not I should invest in an E-Book reader such as Kindel or Nook. See, I'm a new college student right now and I have to spend my money wisely. Since I'm quite a book worm I figured it might be financially convenient to buy one of these E-Book readers like Nook, Kindel, or whatever. One problem is I usually don't prefer to read from screens/monitors but I can deal with it.
    It would be great if I could get some recommendations? (:
  50. QUESTION:
    Would you give me a second chance?
    Okay I was in this relationship for a few months but befroe I met this person I was going through a lot of bad things. I was going through post pardum depression and just really feeling bad. In the midst of our relatioship a lot of things happend not between us but to me. I lost my cousin got fired and evicted all in a matter of three month. When I went into my deep depression I left. I left him in my apartment and never returned. I know I was wrong but I went through a lot to find him to apologize and let him know that I never mean to hurt him and I was very sorry. Then I was not trying re-kindel anything as far as us but now I want to try and make it somthing. My life is a whole lot better now and I think that we could have had a very good relationship. How do I let him know without being so afraid of being rejected? I am afraid because I feel like he is the only man I want to be with!!!!!! what if he is not interested it's so crazy. what chances do I have?
    • ANSWER:
      WELL I'M GLAD TO HEAR THAT EVERYTHING IS O.K. AND THAT YOUR BACK ON TRACK. AS FAR AS HAVING A CHANCE TO GET HIM BACK , THAT DEPENDS IF HE'S IN A RELATIONSHIP NOW. IF HE IS THEN ALL YOU CAN DO IS LET HIM KNOW HOW GREAT OF A FRIEND THAT YOU CAN BE TO HIM. IF HE'S STILL SINGLE, THEN INVITE HIM TO A HOME COOKED MEAL (IT SHOWS THAT YOU CARE ENOUGH TO GO THROUGH ALL THE WORK) AND JUST LET HIM INSIDE YOUR HEART. EXPLAINE TO HIM HOW MUCH HE MEANS TO YOU AND GO INTO DETAIL . MEAN LIKE TO HEAR THAT WE'RE NEEDED AND THAT ALL THE LITTLE THINGS WE DO ARE APPRECIATED. I THINK THAT IF YOU SPEAK FROM YOUR HEART YOU CAN'T GO WRONG UNLESS HE WAS NEVER SERIOUSE TO BEGIN WITH.
      GOOD LUCK!!!
  1. QUESTION:
    KINDLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!?
    ok so i want to get myself a kindle where is THE cheapest place and how much?
    please and thanks!
    • ANSWER:
      Forget Kindle, it's so last year. Get Nook (3G or Wi-Fi) or or Nook Color (Wi-Fi) from bn.com or any Barnes & Noble physical store or BestBuy or Walmart. 3G means the internet connection is included for free for the life of the device thus you can download a new book even when you're walking on the street. Wi-Fi means that you need to have access to wireless hotspot - one expample would be any Barnes & Noble store that provide free Wi-Fi to Nook's or at your home. There's over a million of free public ebooks as well as over a million of ebooks that you need to pay for available through Barnes & Noble eBook store. Prices are generally much lower than for physical books.
      Nook wins.
      - Nook allows to lend books for 2 weeks to friends or to your other devices that run B&N app. Barnes & Noble allows (when you walk in with the Nook to B&N store) to read any available eBook for free while in the store via free provided in the store Wi-Fi. With Nook, while in BN store you get exclusive articles from top authors, and great offers including cafe treats and unique deals.
      - Nook Color is better as a color e-Reader than Kindle simply because it has color and Kindle is black and white. Content that greatly benefits from color - such as kids books and magazines - looks much better and sharper on Nook Color's screen.
      - Nook Color is better as an e-Reader in general than iPad. It has a new generation screen which is anti-glare coated and is better performing in sunlight than iPad's. Also, as it's smaller in size than iPad, the text appears sharper on Nook's screen. Also it has 12,000 (more soon) kids books that are built as a game with feedback.
      - Nook Color has been picked as the editors choice by PC Magazine while pro reviewers of other sites (CNET, ZDNet, Engadget, AllThingsDigital, etc.) mentioned that it tested to be pretty fast for apps and PDF's, and has a beautiful screen.
      - Overall, Nook Color is more than e-Reader as you can also watch video and use Android applications on it. It's a hybrid device, much more than just an e-Reader but not a full tablet as it doesn't have a camera. If all you want is to read novels, Kindle (or the original e-Ink Nook) might be better for you. If you want something more from your device at half of the price of iPad or Galaxy tab, then Nook Color is your best bet.
      - Nook (unlike Kindle) can be used for library ebooks.
      - Nook (unlike Kindle) can be used for renting text-ebooks.
    How do i transfer saved kindle books from my flash drive to my apad?
    • ANSWER:
      Second, connect your epad to the computer, and transfer them from the desktop to your epad.
  4. QUESTION:
    Can you buy kindle books online and upload them to your kindle using the USB rather than whispernet?
    OKay so I just this Kindle, and I would like to buy and upload my books via USB than the whisper net. Is this possible or do I HAVE to use whispernet?
    • ANSWER:
      Yes, you can download via computer and then with your USB cable to the Kindle. Here's how:
      To download your purchase to your computer at the time of purchase:
      1. Select "Transfer via Computer" from the Deliver to: pull-down menu on the product detail page.
      2. Save the file to your computer when prompted by your web browser.
      3. Connect Kindle to your computer with the USB cable.
      4. Use your computer's file browser to drag and drop the file to your Kindle.
  5. QUESTION:
    How is the kindle 3 for reading a4 documents?
    I'm after an ereader. I'm presently looking into the Nook and the Kindle 3.
    The Kindle DX is apparently bigger but not presently available in the UK. I'm tempted to wait for that.
    The battery lives on the kindle really appeals to me but I'm not sure if the Nook is the better ereader or not.
    I'm looking for some advice from people who have purchased ereaders. Is the kindle 3 unsuitable for reading a4 sized books without vertical and / or horizontal scrolling?
    • ANSWER:
      It's not going to be fun to read PDF on a 6" display without reflow.
      Suggestion: Before you buy, try Calibre to convert your PDF to MOBI for Kindle and see if your documents come out ok and with reflow using one of the ebook PC/Mac readers. Amazon also has a PDF to AZW conversion that achieves reflow.
      Nooks supposedly support PDF reflow directly, but I'd want Kindle's E Ink Pearl display rather than Nooks older E Ink Vizplex.
      One last thought: Sony ereaders are considered to have better PDF support as they're based on Adobe's Mobile PDF Reader. The PRS-350, 650, and 950 also have Pearl displays.
  6. QUESTION:
    Amazon Kindle: So what's the difference between the 3G one and the other one?
    I want to get one but I noticed the one I'm planning on getting doesn't have 3G and the other one which is higer does. What is the difference? Does the one without not save the futherest location you read or something like that? I have Kindle on my PC and it does that. If you have wifi in your house do you need the 3G one? I'm a bit confused by it.
    • ANSWER:
      They both save your place in the book.
      The wifi version needs a wireless connection to work. The 3G one uses a wireless phone connection for data.
      >If you have wifi in your house do you need the 3G one<
      No, but then if you are away from your house, you will have no connection unless you can find an open wireless network.
      The Kindle uses one of the connection types to download new content or to synch your location in a book. The lack of a connection though will not keep you from reading a book you have already down loaded.
  7. QUESTION:
    Is an Amazon KIndle good for someone who wants to start to read?
    I really don't like to read but I want to start. Is the Kindle a good place to start?
    • ANSWER:
      I own the Kindle 2, so let me give you some of my opinions about it. I've to say I love it! I think I've read over 30 books with my Kindle, no glitches so far! Kindle books are cheaper than actual books and I think I've saved over 0 for the books I've bought on the Kindle.
      Other than books being cheaper, I thinkit can definitely help you to start and like reading because of the benefits it brought to us. At the beginning I did miss a bit on the feeling of reading books. But now I love to hold the Kindle, the e-ink seems to work very well, it is really like reading books... Now I often read with the Kindle for several hours but I don't feel tired... And I now prefer to manage all books inside the Kindle rather than my never big enough bookshelf... And like to do bookmarking, annotation, dictionary lookup without any additional thing but a Kindle. You can get a cover to protect the Kindle as well, so it will not be easy to break it ;)
      One of the reasons I love my Kindle is that it has helped me improve a lot on my efficiency and utilize my time. Before I have the Kindle, waiting time like when I'm waiting for friends or waiting for shuttle bus or some thing like that is simply wasted. Now I just need to bring the Kindle 2 along with me, and all my favorite books are inside it. Another thing I like the most is the text-to-speech function, which means I can "read" books without even holding or looking at the Kindle. Now I like to use this function when I've myself busy on some boring things, say when I'm on the step machine or doing some housework...
      There are quite a lot of free books (tips: if you're outside the U.S. all the books will have US added, but when you choose to download to computer when you check out, the will be waived, and you can copy the books to your Kindle through USB cable), and many Kindle books, magazines and newspapers are cheaper than the actual paper version. I remember I read these reviews about the benefits of the Kindle when I decided to buy it:
      http://www.amazon.com/gp/redirect.html?ie=UTF8&location=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.com%2Freview%2FR2DUM7S4XW06QN%3Fie%3DUTF8%26ASIN%3DB00154JDAI%26nodeID%3D%26ref%255F%3Dcm%255Fcr%255Fpr%255Fcmt&tag=moreinfo-po-20&linkCode=ur2&camp=1789&creative=390957
      http://www.speedreaderxreview.com/is-kindle-2-worth-the-price
      Finally, in case you don't know, Amazon has just put a price slash on the Kindle 2, and it is now selling 0 cheaper than the price I got my Kindle, and it adds in international wireless access and native PDF support... So take the chance if you want it.
      Hope it helps :)
  8. QUESTION:
    What case will work for my Kindle 2 along with a silicone skin?
    I want to use a silicone skin case on Kindle 2 while reading. However, I need more protection when I put it in my purse. Is there another case that will hold Kindle with skin still on it? Preferably not too bulky.
    I have decided on the Belkin case...thanks for your suggestions. I can't wait to get my Kindle 2...it's for my bday in 2 weeks.
    • ANSWER:
      You can choose between these two cases:
      http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001NPDA44?ie=UTF8&tag=moreinfo-po-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B001NPDA44
      Most of the other cases need to have the Kindle naked in order to fit into the case.
      I'm a Kindle 2 owner too. I've previously bookmarked an article about how to get most out of the Kindle, if you are interested BTW:
  9. QUESTION:
    What does a new model Kindle do that a cheaper netbook or notebook full computer cant do?
    I have never used an Amazon Kindle but looking at their prices I see that they cost as much as some Notebook computers and they are more expensive than a lot of netbooks. What does a Kindle do that a comparable price notebook computer does not do? It seems to me that a cheaper netbook or notebook can do all that a KIndle would do but so much more. Please advise if you have experience with a Kindle.
    • ANSWER:
      It is designed for portable reading, just like MP3 or iPod instead of netbook. I own the Kindle 2 and I like it very much. If you like to read, I'll say it is definitely a must have.
      I remember I read these reviews when I decided to buy the Kindle:
      http://www.amazon.com/gp/redirect.html?ie=UTF8&location=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.com%2Freview%2FR2DUM7S4XW06QN%3Fie%3DUTF8%26ASIN%3DB00154JDAI%26nodeID%3D%26ref%255F%3Dcm%255Fcr%255Fpr%255Fcmt&tag=moreinfo-po-20&linkCode=ur2&camp=1789&creative=390957
      http://www.speedreaderxreview.com/is-kindle-2-worth-the-price
      There is also a good news from Amazon that they just put a price slash on the Kindle 2, and it is now selling 0 cheaper than the price I got my Kindle...
      Hope it helps :)
  10. QUESTION:
    Can a Kindle connect to a hot spot where an ID and password are required?
    I downloaded the manual to see if I want to buy a Kindle. If refers to entering a password to get onto a wi-fi network. My experience has shown that an ID and password are required. Does anyone have experience with using a Kindle at a hotspot and not a home network?
    • ANSWER:
      Yes. I've done that at both home and work, which have encrypted wi-fi networks.
      Just scan for the SSIDs, choose a network, enter the network password, and it will connect.
  11. QUESTION:
    How do I make downloaded kindle books look as good as the actual ones from the kindle store?
    That may sound confusing but what I mean is like when I download a sample kindle book on my kindle, it looks real pretty; the paragraphs are all intact and spaced out and all the words are correct.
    However when I download an ebook (some in pdf, others already in .mobi) and try to convert it, it looks horrible. Paragraphs are virtually nonexistent and words are all jacked up.
    Any tips!!?
    • ANSWER:
      .pdf books won't look right.
      I've had no trouble with .mobi books from places like Project Gutenberg. They format very nicely in the Kindle.
  12. QUESTION:
    How do I get my Kindle 2 to connect to the wifi?
    When I try to connect it never asks me for a password, it just says it is unable to connect, try again later. I have restarted the Kindle but it continues to do the same thing. I know the wifi is running properly because my iPad is connecting. Please help!
    Has anyone recently ordered a Kindle and gotten it? How long did it take to ship?
    I just ordered a Kindle yesterday and I am trying to get an approximation of how long it will take to ship. Has anyone recently ordered one and received it? How long did it take from you placing the order until Amazon let you know that it has shipped? Just curious... Thanks!
    • ANSWER:
      When I bought mine 2 weeks ago, it took them until thursday of this week to ship it. By that time, I'd forgotten about it. They're experiencing delays due to the high demand for it.
  14. QUESTION:
    If I already have ebooks on the Kindle for PC can I transfer them to an actual Kindle device?
    I'm planning on getting a Kindle, and my biggest concern is whether or not I can somehow get all of the ebooks I already bought from the Kindle for PC into my Kindle without having to pay for them again. I appreciate any useful answers!
    • ANSWER:
      The short answer is yes. You can transfer them via your PC, or login on to your Amazon account using the device (provided you are getting a wi-fi one).
  15. QUESTION:
    I just bought a kindle and i am looking to transfer files from elibraries and other soures to my kindle via usb (since i don't have wifi). What steps do i have to take in order to transfer files over the usb cable. Are their any manager programs (either developed by amazon or developed by someon else ) that are necissary for this process or that would make this process easier?
    • ANSWER:
  16. QUESTION:
    How long does it take to deliver an ebook to a kindle?
    I got a Kindle for christmas and I've just registered it today. I've downloaded a couple of books and clicked the 'deliver to Amy's kindle' button. It says that they are pending in the delivery status box. How long will it take for them to actually get onto my kindle?
    Thanks
    I am doing it on the computer with the Kindle plugged in via a USB if that makes any difference.
    • ANSWER:
      Deliver to Amy's Kindle is to have them sent wirelessly to the device. When the Kindle is connected wirelessly, that would download in less than 60 seconds. If the Kindle isn't connected to the internet, to do it via the USB cable, choose Transfer via Computer. Then the files will download to the computer and you can drag and drop them to the Documents folder on the Kindle device.
  17. QUESTION:
    What is the method to buying books on the kindle?
    I am interested in buying a kindle. I am wondering how you buy books off of the kindle though. Do you use a credit card or is it like itunes where you buy gift-cards with money on the card.
    • ANSWER:
      As for how you buy the books, there are a couple of different methods:
      1. You can buy using your computer, just like any other shopping on Amazon. When bought, it will be wirelessly delivered to your Kindle.
      2. You can buy through your Kindle, going to the Kindle Store wirelessly. When you buy a book on your account, it will charge to the credit card you have on file, or if you have an account balance due to gift cards you've entered, it will draw on those.
      I've had mine for about 2 months and am very happy with it. I'm a pretty voracious reader, going through a book a week or so. It's nice not to have all those books left over that I have to figure out how to get rid of every now and then. And your Kindle account will keep those books forever. 20 years after you bought and read it, you can read it again.
  18. QUESTION:
    What are the advantages of the Kindle over going to the Library?
    I really want a Kindle but the only thing holding my parent's back is that they think it is a waste of money to buy an expensive device, then have to also pay for the books too on top of that when you can just get free books from your local library? If you agree with my parent's, don't answer. I only want some good reasons to convince them. Thank you.
    • ANSWER:
      The Amazon Kindle store offers lots and lots of free books - several thousand, at last count. Most of these are classics, but there are some scifi/fantasy, thriller, romance, and nonfiction titles, too. New free titles appear constantly - just look at the Kindle bestseller list.
      There are also TONS of amazing "indie" books out there, mostly priced less than .00. I've found some really great books for less than a buck that you would NEVER find in a library!
      You can do some pretty basic web browsing (google, wikipedia, and the like) and there's no monthly charge - something you wouldn't get with, say, and iphone or a netbook.
      It might be useful at school - say you need to read "Great Expectations" for a class. With your Kindle, you can highlight and "clip" passages, make your own annotations in the text, and go online to do research. Plus, the book itself is FREE in the Kindle store.
      If you're really into reading (say, you read more than 15-20 books a year) the cost for the Kindle really starts to balance out, as the price for Kindle books is generally much less than the price for a paper book.
      Save up your birthday money, do some jobs around the neighborhood, and save up - they're only 9 now!
  19. QUESTION:
    How well does the Kindle work with large-page pdf documents?
    I'm considering getting a kindle, and I'd like to stick with the original one to save on cost. The size seems to do well with average-sized paperbacks, but I'm wondering how easy it is to read larger-sized pdf documents. I have some full-sized textbooks in pdf, as well as many journal articles that are formatted to paper much larger than the screen. Has anyone had experience reading such documents on kindle? How did it work out?
    • ANSWER:
      The large size .pdf will display on the Kindle screen in full. The text will be very tiny, and you will have to zoom in to various sections.
  20. QUESTION:
    What's the difference between the new Kindle Wi-Fi and the 3G Kindle?
    I'm going to buy my mom a kindle for Christmas because she loves to read. But what is the difference between the 3G kindle and the regular WiFi one? I know the WiFi kindle can only be used at a wireless hotspot. But what does 3G do exactly? Is it supposed to be faster??
    • ANSWER:
      Forget Kindle, it's so last year. Get Nook (3G or Wi-Fi) or or Nook Color (Wi-Fi) from bn.com or any Barnes & Noble physical store or BestBuy or Walmart. 3G means the internet connection is included for free for the life of the device thus you can download a new book even when you're walking on the street. Wi-Fi means that you need to have access to wireless hotspot - one expample would be any Barnes & Noble store that provide free Wi-Fi to Nook's or at your home. There's over a million of free public ebooks as well as over a million of ebooks that you need to pay for available through Barnes & Noble eBook store. Prices are generally much lower than for physical books.
      Nook wins.
      - Nook allows to lend books for 2 weeks to friends or to your other devices that run B&N app. Barnes & Noble allows (when you walk in with the Nook to B&N store) to read any available eBook for free while in the store via free provided in the store Wi-Fi. With Nook, while in BN store you get exclusive articles from top authors, and great offers including cafe treats and unique deals.
      - Nook Color is better as a color e-Reader than Kindle simply because it has color and Kindle is black and white. Content that greatly benefits from color - such as kids books and magazines - looks much better and sharper on Nook Color's screen.
      - Nook Color is better as an e-Reader in general than iPad. It has a new generation screen which is anti-glare coated and is better performing in sunlight than iPad's. Also, as it's smaller in size than iPad, the text appears sharper on Nook's screen. Also it has 12,000 (more soon) kids books that are built as a game with feedback.
      - Nook Color has been picked as the editors choice by PC Magazine while pro reviewers of other sites (CNET, ZDNet, Engadget, AllThingsDigital, etc.) mentioned that it tested to be pretty fast for apps and PDF's, and has a beautiful screen.
      - Overall, Nook Color is more than e-Reader as you can also watch video and use Android applications on it. It's a hybrid device, much more than just an e-Reader but not a full tablet as it doesn't have a camera. If all you want is to read novels, Kindle (or the original e-Ink Nook) might be better for you. If you want something more from your device at half of the price of iPad or Galaxy tab, then Nook Color is your best bet.
      - Nook (unlike Kindle) can be used for library ebooks.
      - Nook (unlike Kindle) can be used for renting text-ebooks.
      The Kindle is a fantastic eReader, but that's all it really does well.
  25. QUESTION:
    Its the commercial where they show the kindle only. They turn it a little bit. And i think a guy is singing "la la la" a couple times.
    • ANSWER:
      The song is here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=__dnuwJWTvU. You won't hear the part you recognize until 1:26 in, but, it is a great song huh? :) The Song is Lovers Carvings by Bibio
  27. QUESTION:
    How do you save newspaper subscriptions on your Kindle indefinitely?
    My boss has a Kindle. He wants to be able to save his New York Times papers indefinitely. He'd also like to be able to choose certain issues of other papers for unlimited amounts of time. So far I can only find that it auto saves for 7 days. Any ideas?
    • ANSWER:
      The Kindle will store the seven most recent issues of your newspapers and magazines. If you’d like to keep a copy of an issue indefinitely, open the issue, press the Menu button, and select “Keep this Issue”; you will then see the word “keep” to the left of the issue title in Home.
      The Only way to store more than 7 issues it would it be to save them on a computer and manually move then back and forward. It's just how the kindle works.
  28. QUESTION:
    Between ipad and kindle, which is the best option for self publishing a non fiction book online?
    I am considering self publishing my non fiction book online (in order to save cost) but I need to choose between ipad or kindle. I do not know which one of them is the better option in terms of marketability, distribution, royalties, cost etc. Then again, is it possible to publish on both of them simultaneously?
    • ANSWER:
      Almost every electronic book reader out there can read pdf files.
      As the above post mentioned, many companies will format ebooks in different formats as well.
      I think you need to focus more on who has good distribution for your work than what device people will read it on.
      I will say however, as someone who has recently purchased an Ipad, I don't see the kindle competing.
  29. QUESTION:
    How do you pay for ebooks on a kindle?
    I'm planning on buying a kindle but I'm only 18 and don't want to get into the scary world of credit cards just yet. Are there any alternatives like a paypal account? Can you buy giftcards for ebooks at certain stores? Also how would you set up a paypal account if that works? Just what are some alternatives to the credit cards?
    • ANSWER:
      Yep, amazon supports both gift cards & paypal.
      I would think gift cards might be the best option since you can purchase them directly at local retail places and then just apply the balance to your amazon account, which you can access on your kindle.
      Here are the two basic kindle models you might want to consider:
      http://www.syncpedia.com/goto/kindle_special
      http://www.syncpedia.com/goto/kindle_3g
      Personally, I think the 3g is totally worth it since you can use the web for free anywhere.. so I might consider the 3g upgrade for more.. but on the other hand if you decide you just want wifi (so it only has connectivity in wifi hotspots like airports or home) then I think you should just get the special offer kindle since it the ads are not that annoying (you don't see them when reading).
  30. QUESTION:
    What is the song on the Nook or Kindle commercial that starts with a girl in a hammock?
    I haven't been able to find the song of one of the e-reader commercials (I think it's the kindle, but I can't be sure). It starts with a girl swinging in a hammock and goes on to show the ereader in various settings (for example, I recall it sitting on a treadmill while a girl is picking up a water bottle and drinking from it). Can you tell me the name of the song? Thank you!
    • ANSWER:
      In short:
      > Don't go for Nook Color. It's using backlight screen like computer screen, and is difficult to our eyes. Just not suitable for reading purpose.
      > Choose the Nook if you want to be:
      - Able to borrow ebooks from library to your ebook reader
      - Able to read books in epub format (without need of conversion) on your ebook reader
      > Choose the Kindle if you want to be:
      - Able to have free 3G wireless access
      - Able to download books and use 3G wireless even you're outside of the United States
      - Able to have text-to-speech function to read books to you like audio books
    What are some other electonic reading devices other that the popular Kindle and the one Sony offers?
    Was trying to dig up some info on the what was available out there in the way of electronic reading devices, other than the Sony or Amazon's Kindle. Would like to find a unit that would allow me to utilize ebooks I already own along with new purchases. Not too thrilled by the fact that Kindle has done away with the external memory option and does not use standard wireless. Also most reviews I find on the Sony unit complain about screen glare. What are my other options if any?
    • ANSWER:
      Some more ebook readers include:
      Cybook
      BeBook
      EZ Reader
      iRex
      Cool-er
      Not all Sonys have a touchscreen that causes glare. Some people are bothered by the reflection and others are not. It's nothing compared to the screens on phones, computers, and tvs.
      You can research them all here and watch video demos of them in action:
      http://www.the-ebook-reader.com
  35. QUESTION:
    How can you completely remove a book from a Kindle reader?
    I don't just want to put them in archives, I want them completely gone. My child is going to borrow my kindle for a long car trip, but I have some romance novels that would not be appropriate should they get curious. They were free books to begin with, so I wouldn't be losing any money on them.
    • ANSWER:
      First delete it from your kindle. To get it out of the archives go to www.amazon.com/myk (the manage your kindle page). Go to your book list. Click on the + sign next to the book and on the right hand side you'll see an option to delete this book. That's how you remove it from the archives, but as you know you won't have it anymore period if you do that.
    Is it just a toy? Or is it really worth buying in your opinion?
      Kindle is definitely an amazing device. Its worth the money.You can put ebooks/notes/audio books on your kindle also Notes and annotations are very easy to make.Very easy to use with the PC and the Mac Kindle is very straight forward there's no need for additional software required for Kindle. Also supports you can also increase the text size which is again amazing.E-INK screen technology that don’t glare in any light so no strain to eyes and less harmful. There are wide range of books on kindle many are free and other are cheaper at price than the actual books so yes I have saved a lot of money till now.
      You dont have to carry now all those heavy actual books, kindle is so light weight which is carrying almost 1500 books within it. Since I travel a lot I really like the 3G Internet you can get the internet wherever you go. Whenever you are tired of reading you can also you Text-To-Speech with auto-page turning feature which is jst so relaxing. If the small size strains your eyes a lot than can also change the text-size. I must say Kindle is a small magic books really I cant live without it.
  38. QUESTION:
    Amazon Kindle - does something remain on the screen while the device is turned off?
    I'm planning on buying the new Kindle 3. I know that e-ink displays can keep something on the screen even though there is no power to it... and I'm wondering if the Kindle does that? What I mean is will it show a screen before it turns off and then stay there until it is turned on again, like the Kobo reader? Or does
    it just go blank?
    • ANSWER:
      The screen will be blank on any device if it's actually turned off. The screensavers only display when the device is sleeping. Most devices recommend that you only put them to sleep rather than turning them off and it takes no power to maintain the screensaver image on an e-ink device.
  39. QUESTION:
    I have a Kindle reader and I found a book on Amazon I wanted to read... However this book is unavailable in the US due to copyright issues. I wanted to try changing my country so that I could buy this book in a place where it wasn't unavailable. Will changing my country affect my purchased books, and will it result in any negative consequences? And can it be reversed?
    • ANSWER:
      You need to have a credit card and an address registered to that country as well or I believe it won't let you purchase anything.
  40. QUESTION:
    What does one location in a Kindle equal in a real book?
    Kindle books are divided into "locations". I am wondering what locations would represent in a normal book. Lines? Pages? Paragraphs? A certain amount of words?
    Also, is there anyway to translate the location number into pages? For example, one page in the normal book equals 35 Kindle locations?
    • ANSWER:
      A Kindle "location" is based on character count. Several sources say that a location represents 128 characters, although at least one site (booksprung) says that 122-125 characters is more accurate.
      Either way, it tells you how far you are into a book in a way that doesn't change when you change the font size or view the book on a device with a different sized screen.
      The only way to use it to convert to pages would be to decide how may characters are on a "standard" page, and then covert the location to pages using that number. The answer would change based on the size of the page in the book and the size of the font used.
  41. QUESTION:
    Can Amazon Kindle be used with regular wireless home network if traveling oversea?
    I love Amazon Kindle but I will be away from USA for some time and was wondering if I would be able to connect Kindle to the network via regular home network via wireless connection.
    Thanks for your help.
    • ANSWER:
      I have just ordered mine and it shoud arrive today (yay!), so I'm not exactly talking from experience here, but...
      From what I understand, the Kindle uses Sprint's cellular telephone network to deliver its content in the States. This cannot be used when travellig overseas. However, you can plug the Kindle to your computer via USB cable and download your purchases this way. You can do this through the Manage Your Kindle link on the Amazon site. This also means that if you wish to purchase anything while overseas, you would have to do it through your computer, as the wireless feature won't work.
      I hope this helps!
  42. QUESTION:
    Can you read your kindle purchases on multiple devices?
    I am getting a kindle ereader and I also have kindle for android on my phone. If I buy a book on the kindle, can I also view/read it on my phone as long as I use the same account?
    • ANSWER:
      yes, amazon.com offers the "kindle" app for almost every device. You can b uy a book on your kindle and read it on your PC or on your blackberry.I love answering kindle questions, it's by far one of my favorite devices that i keep in my bag.
      For starters and most importantly I own the Kindle 2 (soon to be upgrading to the Kindle DX), and it is easy for me to say I love it! I think I've read over 20 books so far.
      There are other reviews on the Kindle 2 here:
      http://www.amazon.com/gp/redirect.html?ie=UTF8&location=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.com%2Freview%2FB0015T963C%3Fie%3DUTF8%26ref_%3Ddp%5Ftop%5Fcm%5Fcr%5Facr%5Ftxt%26showViewpoints%3D1&tag=techcomprepa-20&linkCode=ur2&camp=1789&creative=390957
      And for the Kindle DX:
      http://www.amazon.com/gp/redirect.html?ie=UTF8&location=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.com%2Freview%2FB0015TG12Q%3Fie%3DUTF8%26ref_%3Ddp%5Ftop%5Fcm%5Fcr%5Facr%5Ftxt%26showViewpoints%3D1&tag=techcomprepa-20&linkCode=ur2&camp=1789&creative=390957
      I love my Kindle because it has helped me improve a lot on my efficiency and utilize my time. Before I owned the Kindle, waiting time like when I'm waiting for friends or waiting for shuttle bus or some thing like that is simply wasted. Now I just need to bring the Kindle 2 along with me. Another thing I like the most is the text-to-speech function, which means I can "read" books without even holding or looking at the Kindle. Now I like to use this function when I've myself busy on some boring things, say when I'm on the step machine or doing some housework...
      I like reading and at the beginning I missed a bit on the feeling of reading books. But now I love to hold the Kindle, the e-ink seems to work very well, it is really like reading books... Now I often read with the Kindle for several hours but I don't feel tired.
      I linked your directly to the Kindle Store on amazon.com! I really do hope you consider getting your own =)
      There's actually two types of audio books Kindle will read.
    Thanks, you were all really helpful! (:
    • ANSWER:
      I'm sorry, I don't think it is going to be possible. Kindle books are in a format that only Kindle uses. Sony can't read them. You might (I'm not positive) be able to transfer books that are in PDF format.
      ETA
      There are lots of indiividual bookstores out there. Most of the independent bookstores will have PDF format, and that should work on most e-readers. You can also try the publisher's or author's website if you are looking for a specific title.
    How do I get my kindle to connect to wi fi?
    Wi Fi is connected, but the kindle won't connect to it even with my password.
Frequently Asked Questions
  1. QUESTION:
    How to transfer Kindle for PC to Calibre for nook?
    I use calibre to transfer books to my nook. I know you can buy kindle books for your nook by using Calibre. But I cant seem to figure it out! And I need fairly simple step-by-step instructions for getting things from the "Kindle for PC" library, to my "Calibre" library. I think I know how to get it to my nook once its on Calibre, but if you want to give me directions just in case, that would be nice!
    • ANSWER:
      Just buy the books through a source that is already in epub, PDF or another open format compatible with Nook. Why would you bother going through the extra steps buying it in a format you know you can't use? I'm pretty sure you can't use Calibre to convert Kindle books anyway as I believe they are DRM protected.
  2. QUESTION:
    Kindle 3: I converted a PDF to Mobi using Calibre - Can you not highlight/do a note?
    When I try to add a highlight or note I hit "place cursor in the text" from the menu but then it just comes up with a magnifying glass "zoom." Is there no way to highlight/place a note when you convert a PDF to mobi with Calibre on Kindle 3?
    • ANSWER:
      I think you must not have any problem adding notes or highlights to your converted text as it is already a .mobi file. Please, take a look at the user's guide and you'll find the right way to do what you want.
  3. QUESTION:
    Organising Kindle collections using calibre?
    I've got a Kindle 3 with hundreds of books and it's quite tedious to add them to collections on the kindle, one by one.
    I've just downloaded Calibre - is there a way of sorting my books into collections using calibre?
    (reposting a question from someone else that had earlier been deleted)
    • ANSWER:
      Yes. You can rename the file.
      Ex. Harry Potter Collection.
      Originally named Sorcerer's Stone
      Rename Harry Potter01- Sorcerer's Stone
      then next book Harry Potter02- Chamber of Secrets
      Harry Potter03- Prisoner of Azkaban...
      that way when it puts them in alphabetical order it keeps the collection together and in order as well. thats what we do.
      good luck. plus you can add your own book covers to it as well.
  4. QUESTION:
    Calibre and Kindle 3 Wi-Fi?
    Is there any way to do this?
    Thanks.
    I've reset my Kindle to factory defaults.
    This has solved the folder problems.
    Thanks anyways. :)
  6. QUESTION:
    is there a way to get books that I converted myself onto my kindle to sync to all of my devices?
    I have some books from the internet that I downloaded as PDF's and used calibre to change them to MOBI format. They look great on my kindle, but are not archived or recognized by my macbook kindle app and my phone kindle app. Any suggestions?
    • ANSWER:
      I believe that the phone Kindle app is not currently set up to view things other than books downloaded from the Kindle store. However, the third post in the link below nicely explains how you can get the .MOBI things onto your Kindle for Mac.
      As I side note, I just wanted to say that PDF's can be placed directly onto Kindles without converting them (instructions on how on how to do this are on Amazon's Kindle page).
  9. QUESTION:
    I got a Kindle for Christmas, but ...?
    I was trying to figure out how to get some ebooks I already have on my computer onto it.
    Apparently the Kindle is very finicky about what format it uses. So I went out online and found the program Calibre. What I need to know though is what is the best format to use for the Kindle? Calibre can convert ALMOST anything to anything else so I was just wondering the best format that the Kindle can handle?
    Thanks
    • ANSWER:
      Obviously, the best format for the Kindle is Amazon's own ebook format (.AZW and .AZW1). I'm guessing that that probably isn't an option, though, so the next best thing is an unprotected mobipocket (.MOBI and .PRC) and last but not least a simple text document (.TXT).
      A link of all formats that Kindle supports can be found in the sources :)
    please help. i need the title to show up. the books are in .pdf and then i put them in .amz or something like that for the kindle.
    • ANSWER:
      Have you tried to rename the file name of your ebooks? For PDF files, you don't need to convert it to AMZ files too. PDF files can now be read on the Kindle 2 natively.
      Just see "Transferring Files via USB" to see how to copy PDF files directly from the computer:
      http://www.amazon.com/gp/redirect.html?ie=UTF8&location=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.com%2Fgp%2Fhelp%2Fcustomer%2Fdisplay.html%3Fie%3DUTF8%26nodeId%3D200375630&tag=more_info-20&linkCode=ur2&camp=1789&creative=390957
  14. QUESTION:
    I've got a Kindle 3 and I want to read pdf?
    and I really want to put my homework in it. I tried to use Calibre but it is small and unreadable. Is there a service offered by amazon that will help me convert it to the Kindle format? Is it free?
    • ANSWER:
      When you register your Kindle with Amazon (so that you can buy books from the Kindle Store), they allocate you an email address for their document conversion service. It should be something-or-other@kindle.com. You may need to poke around in your account settings to find it. Attach the PDF to a blank email, put "Convert" in the subject line, and send it to your @kindle.com address. It will turn up on your Kindle a few minutes later.
      This service is free if you use Wifi to download the converted document. There might be a small charge if you use 3G.
      It does the best it can with the conversion, but doesn't do very well with complex layouts. PDF is designed for documents where the paper size, font size and layout can be known in advance - documents that are meant to be printed, in other words. It doesn't always translate well to devices where the user is allowed to alter the text size on the fly. But at least this way you should be able to read the words :-)
  15. QUESTION:
    Kindle Collection Manager?
    I have over 100 ebooks, and it's very tedious to add them to collections one by one on my kindle. Is there a way to add multiple books to a collection while my kindle is connected to my desktop? Calibre?Or is this program, Kindle Collection Manager, a way to do that? Has anyone tried it before? What was your results?
    http://www.colegate.net/KindleCollectionManager/
    • ANSWER:
      I'd go with Calibre, as it is Kindle compatible and multi-device friendly. This means that as long as you have a clear idea of what you are doing, you'll only need to do it once, and yes, you can drag and drop multifiles at once using it.
  16. QUESTION:
    Calibre eBook Management advice?
    Okay, I know (knew) how to use Calibre to add ebooks to my Kindle, but haven't used it for a while. I downloaded the latest version (7.5), but there's no 'Send to Device' button in the toolbar. So, I right clicked on the relevant ebook and it does say 'Send to Device' in there, but nothing happens when I click on it?
    Am I missing something?
    Thanks for your assistance,
    Ray
  19. QUESTION:
    Which is the best ereader-not kindle?
    I want an ereader that deals with pdfs well and can read epub books. I don't want a kindle. I have tried using calibre and it does a really terrible job of converting my epub files. And even with the new kindle, you have to do all sorts of stuff to read pdfs. I just want a reader that can read pdfs and epubs easily without having to convert them. I have been looking at the sony and it looks good. But are there any others out there that can do this, that are perhaps a bit cheaper? I am a student so good pdf handling (legible, not perfect) is important. I am also in Australia, so need to be able to get it here.
    *I realise this question has been asked a few thousand times. But everyone seems to be in love with the kindle. It doesn't work for what I want, and its hard to work with in Australia. So I need other options.
    Thank you
    Thank you to those who listened. I repeat. I. Do. Not. Want. A. Kindle. I want to be able to read epubs without having to convert them. They never work out right.
    I just bought a kindle?
    I have a bunch of books on my com in pdf and epub format. I want to convert these files to a kindle format, but I dont want to use mobi or calibre because I don't want to use anything that is related to the internet in any way. I just want something to convert them strictly on my computer so that I can just drag and drop the converted folders. It seems simple but I have been searching for hours and I can't find anything online. Any advice?
    • ANSWER:
      You have no other choose but use Calibre, Calibre is a PC software can convert pdf and epub ebooks, it have the ebooks' folder you can copy and drop, I think you do not use Calibre, it's the best ebook converter.
      Download Calibre here:http://www.dvdvideosoftware.org/download/calibre.html
  21. QUESTION:
    Kobo books on a Kindle?
    I needed a book for English but it was only on Kobo and I have a Kindle. I bought it but I need to take it with me, not just on my desktop.I looked up transferring files to an E-Reader (Kindle) and I just got liberate the drm and calibre and all thsese other technical terms I don't quite understand...I don't want to wipe out the book but I need some step by step instructions on how to take a Kobo file and put it on a Kindle. Do I need to download a specific program for file conversion? Thanks
    • ANSWER:
      Almost certainly, it can't be done.
      The two eReaders use a completely different file format for eBooks. There are conversion programs out there, like Calibre, but they only work if the eBook has not been locked with Digital Rights Management (DRM).
  22. QUESTION:
    I bought books on my kindle, and I was wondering how to transfer them to my nook color?
    I owned a kindle latest generation... well still own... anyways i saved up and bought a nook color because i liked some of the features better and blah blah blah... Anyways, I bought files through the kindle store, and I was just wondering if their was a way to transfer or convert them over to the nook. I tried Calibre e-book management (converting to epub), but it won't read them and I tried just copy pasting the files but nook didn't register them.
    • ANSWER:
      There are several reasons that I have not bought a Kindle and this is one of them. You cannot trade or give your books to someone else after you finish with them. and that is pretty what you are trying to do. Good luck
  23. QUESTION:
    Which is better for reading pdf, kindle or sony reader?
    I have tried using calibre to convert pdf files and epub books. But they don't always work out well, especially with chapter placement and extra details. So I am wondering which device will read the pdfs better. I can live with the bad conversions if I have to. But if I can just put pdfs on the device without converting them it would be better. So which does the better job, kindle or sony ereader. I am looking at the sony, because its touch, but the kindle is supposed to be better. But I'm not sure. So other advice would be good.
    I'm a student btw so lots of notes and sources and essentials readings are in pdf. I need something affordable that I can read these on.
    Maybe I should mention I have a mac. That computer software link is only for windows, and doesn't work on mac.
    • ANSWER:
      For PDF support, Sony Ereaders have the advantage due to their use of the official Adobe Mobile PDF Reader. See "How Good Is the Ereader's PDF Support:"
      http://www.howtodecide.com/ereader/#~tf.pdf=y
      The big advantage of the Sony Readers over Kindle used to be library lending, but that advantage will be gone later this year when Amazon adds that capability to Kindles as announced recently.
      They both have the excellent E Ink Pearl displays.
      Sony's have touch screens. Kindles have a bit better support for apps and games. Kindles have more and less expensive options for WiFi and 3G. Kindle DX has the biggest screen by far: 9.7 inches vs 7 inches for the high-end Sony Daily (PRS-950). Screen size comes to be important for view PDFs to avoid horizontal scrolling in cases where reflow doesn't work.
      Finally, Sony Readers are more expensive across the board than Kindles.
      .
  24. QUESTION:
    Is there a site to download kindle books properly formatted for the device already?
    I recently got a kindle, and though it reads PDFs, the ones I have have missing pages and such when viewed on the device. When I convert them using Calibre or Mobipocket, they end up with paragraphs moved around, missing letters, or improper spacing. Is there a site (legal or otherwise) with books available in the proper AMZ format, or where books are uploaded that are properly set up for the device?
    Thank you.
    I'm looking for someplace other than Amazon. I already own many of these books from other sources, but not in the proper format, and I'm not looking to have to repurchase them.
    • ANSWER:
      Yes, go onto Amazon.com You can download your Kindle e-books with Whispersync. Works great!
  25. QUESTION:
    What are the best e-readers with screen size 8 or 9 inches (so not the big Kindle) ?
    I saw that with the software Calibre (http://calibre-ebook.com/), you can easily convert comics formats (cbr/cbz) into ebook formats such as LRF or EPUB. So I'm interested to buy an e-reader for comics reading but I tried with a 6 inches model (the SONY PRS-600) and screen is way too small. Kindle is too large, so I search one with 8 or 9 inches screen, preferably with the e-ink pearl technology for the screen.
    I already looked the ASUS DR-900 and SAMSUNG E101 (maybe too big) but these two seems abandoned ?
    • ANSWER:
      Mainstream ereader screen sizes are 5 inch, 6 inch, 7 inch, and 9.7 inch:
      Here are the E Ink ereaders:
  26. QUESTION:
    Is there a way to have a summary of the book on Kindle?
    I've only recently received a Kindle, so I'm a bit of a newbie. While setting it up I was unable to find a way to look at a book summary when browsing the titles I had already put it. For most books it won't be too big an issue because I can remember, but for books I have yet to read, I doubt I'll be able to remember. Is there anyway to do this? Or is it a feature they have yet to somehow discover?
    (I use Calibre if that changes anything)
    Thank you for your answer. This seems to be for amazon books only, and within the Kindle store. Is there no way to look at summaries of the books I already have on the Kindle? It can hold up to 1500 titles and I will not remember what they're all about. I don't always have access to the internet to look at the Kindle store. Any other way?
    • ANSWER:
      Sure. When you are browsing the Kindle store, click on the book. That same page where you can buy it also offers a summary of the book. You may need to click on the summary to expand it so you can read the whole thing.
      On that same buy page, you can click on customer reviews and read through the reviews of Amazon customers who have read that book.
      You can also download a sample of the book, usually the first chapter or so.
      I've linked to the Amazon page that shows all this.
      UPDATE: Well, again for books only purchased through Amazon, and if you do have wireless connection, I stumbled upon a way to see descriptions of books you already have on the Kindle. You open the book, then click on Menu and choose Book Description. At that point, it will link to the store's buy page with that book which contains the description.
    • ANSWER:
  29. QUESTION:
    How to download HP ebooks?
    I've found several sites to download free Harry Potter ebooks but I guess I'm not very tech savvy and I can't seem to do it. Everytime I click on something, it takes me to a site telling me I have to install something first, some free and some not so free. I've tried some of the free ones. Sometimes it tells me it's downloading, and I find something in the download but can't get to it.
    I want the books for my Kindle, I have Calibre so I can turn a text file into a .mobi if need be. I'm using a Mac computer.
    I pretty much am useless with computer stuff. Where can I find the (free) downloads for the Harry Potter series with software that is free(is there any such thing?) and easy to figure out? Something that will give me step-by-step instructions to download them?
    • ANSWER:
      I can't say how to use the kindle, but I know for my iPad I need a certain app to read/download books. Also to read them on the computer most sites require you to download their software to wad their books to prevent piracy or illegal printing. I bet your kindle probably came with some sort of software to transfer books to or I though those let you download directly to it.
  30. QUESTION:
    I downloaded a Borders EPUB ebook?
    I put it into Calibre, so I could convert it to MOBI to put it on my Kindle. But when I put it on Calibre and try to convert it.... it says: Cannot Convert book because no suitable source format was found. Anything to do with the DRM? Is there any way I can get money back on my giftcard, and give the eBook back to Borders? Thanks
    -G
    • ANSWER:
      Since you downloaded the book into Calibre, you've "used" it. You can't return the e-book for credit any longer. You must remember you don't own the book, you only own the rights to read it. Your machine read it. You got what you paid for. That said, you can go to the store and make an argument, and if you find the right understanding manager, he could restore the credit. (Borders isin the business of making customers, not selling books. Some managers understand that.)
  31. QUESTION:
    Amazon Kindle3 vs Barnes and Noble Nook?
    I am interested in buying an E-Reader and i can't decide if i should buy a Kindle or Nook. I read almost everywhere that the kindle was easier, and more user-friendly but the 1 reason that's holding me back is that the Kindle doesn't support Epub so i can't rent books on my reader. Is there any way to convert epub files so they can be on my kindle, i heard about a program called CALIBRE is this easy to use or is it a long procces? is it worth getting the nook because it has epub?
    eBooks - Who collects/uses these?
    Before I select a ebook appliance, I would like to know what PC software you guys use to read/manage your libraries. If I can find good software that I love, I will use this to select a appliance that is compatible.
    What PC software do you guys love (PC or Mac)? I am struggling with "Calibre" and it is giving me some grief, but it's strength is to manage your library rather than reading.
    What non-proprietary sites do you use for eBooks? (I am afraid of tying myself to Kindle/Amazon or Nook/Barns&Noble). I know about Project Gutenberg and I am using a .txt file and .html file from them for testing.
    What other advice, links can you give me before I put some eBook reader on my wish list?
      I am waiting for Apple to come out with their rumored tablet that will probably put Kindle out of business.
  33. QUESTION:
    Problems when converting PDF to MOBI?
    First off, I'm on Mac OSX 10.6 Snow Leopard, using the newest version of Calibre to do the conversions. I can get other software and price isn't that much of a problem.
    Right, well, I'm converting a PDF file with pictures to a MOBI so I can read it on my Kindle, but the images do this weird thing where they duplicate the top half twice and doesn't show the bottom half. I've tried things like telling it to ignore margins when converting and a few other things, but nothing's working. If someone has had this same problem and/or knows how to fix it, I would be very grateful.
    Thanks in advance.
  34. QUESTION:
    Why are NFL owners making impulsive decisions today (see details)?
    first off, the Jaguars selected Tyson Alaulu with the 10th pick. Alualu was a projected late 1st to early 2nd round draft choice; the Jaguars could have traded down about 15 spots and still gotten him.
    Secondly, why did the Chargers trade all the way up to the 12th pick to get Matthews? Matthews would have easily fell on their lap at the 28th pick.
    Lastly, the Eagles move up to get Brandon Graham which made me scratch my head. The Eagles could have stayed at their original spot and still gotten Graham. If not him, then definetly someone of his caliber like Everson Griffin or Sergio Kindle.
      Im sure they all have their reasons which makes it ok for them to do what they do. I do agree to an extent with you though. Puzzling.
Frequently Asked Questions
  1. QUESTION:
    What's the difference between the new Kindle Wi-Fi and the 3G Kindle?
    I'm going to buy my mom a kindle for Christmas because she loves to read. But what is the difference between the 3G kindle and the regular WiFi one? I know the WiFi kindle can only be used at a wireless hotspot. But what does 3G do exactly? Is it supposed to be faster??
    • ANSWER:
      Forget Kindle, it's so last year. Get Nook (3G or Wi-Fi) or or Nook Color (Wi-Fi) from bn.com or any Barnes & Noble physical store or BestBuy or Walmart. 3G means the internet connection is included for free for the life of the device thus you can download a new book even when you're walking on the street. Wi-Fi means that you need to have access to wireless hotspot - one expample would be any Barnes & Noble store that provide free Wi-Fi to Nook's or at your home. There's over a million of free public ebooks as well as over a million of ebooks that you need to pay for available through Barnes & Noble eBook store. Prices are generally much lower than for physical books.
      Nook wins.
      - Nook allows to lend books for 2 weeks to friends or to your other devices that run B&N app. Barnes & Noble allows (when you walk in with the Nook to B&N store) to read any available eBook for free while in the store via free provided in the store Wi-Fi. With Nook, while in BN store you get exclusive articles from top authors, and great offers including cafe treats and unique deals.
      - Nook Color is better as a color e-Reader than Kindle simply because it has color and Kindle is black and white. Content that greatly benefits from color - such as kids books and magazines - looks much better and sharper on Nook Color's screen.
      - Nook Color is better as an e-Reader in general than iPad. It has a new generation screen which is anti-glare coated and is better performing in sunlight than iPad's. Also, as it's smaller in size than iPad, the text appears sharper on Nook's screen. Also it has 12,000 (more soon) kids books that are built as a game with feedback.
      - Nook Color has been picked as the editors choice by PC Magazine while pro reviewers of other sites (CNET, ZDNet, Engadget, AllThingsDigital, etc.) mentioned that it tested to be pretty fast for apps and PDF's, and has a beautiful screen.
      - Overall, Nook Color is more than e-Reader as you can also watch video and use Android applications on it. It's a hybrid device, much more than just an e-Reader but not a full tablet as it doesn't have a camera. If all you want is to read novels, Kindle (or the original e-Ink Nook) might be better for you. If you want something more from your device at half of the price of iPad or Galaxy tab, then Nook Color is your best bet.
      - Nook (unlike Kindle) can be used for library ebooks.
      - Nook (unlike Kindle) can be used for renting text-ebooks.
  2. QUESTION:
    How come I need a password to get online with 3G Kindle?
    Please excuse my ignorance about IT matters, but how come with a 3G Kindle, I still have to use password to use wifi in certain areas? I thought that 3G meant I could go online and not worry about this...please explain if you can!
    Thank you.
    • ANSWER:
      To use 3g, you have to be in a 3g area. if the kindle is set to use wifi, it will do that preferentially (as it is cheaper then 3g), so if you are in an area that has wifi that you don't know the password to, you may need to turn wifi off to get the 3g signal.
  3. QUESTION:
    Should I get a 3G kindle or just the kindle?
    The 3G kindle costs roughly more. Is it worth the money? I know that it has more space for storage and is faster, but it can't add more space. Can the regular kindle add more space? I'm planning on ordering it today. What do you think?
    • ANSWER:
      The 3G Kindle refers to it's ability to use a 3G cellular data network. That's the only difference between it and the wi-fi version.
      Speed, function and memory are all the same.
  4. QUESTION:
    What is the difference between the Kindle Wi-Fi and the Kindle 3G and Wi-Fi? And what would you suggest?
    I would like to get a Kindle but I don't understand what the difference between them is. I know they both have wi-fi capabilities but what does the 3G add to it that makes it better?
    Also, any comparisons between the Nook and the Kindle would be appreciated, like if you have one or the other or have any insight as to why I would want one over the other.
    • ANSWER:
      the 3g basically means it will operate much faster. With just wifi its 9 and with wifi its 9, so if your willing to pay more for the speed go for it, but i would save my money and just stick with the wifi.
  5. QUESTION:
    What websites are available on Kindle 3G?
    I want to get a Kindle with 3G, but what websites are available? Can I go on facebook, google, yahoo? What else can you do with the 3G other than the amazon book store?
    • ANSWER:
      Countries like the United States, China, Russia, Germany, Japan and the UK allow you to, as far as I can tell here in the US, visit any website. I regularly use my Kindle for email, Google, xkcd comics and article database browsing. Do remember that 3G Kindle web navigation and loading is quite slow and can be very... tedious.
      The Kindle is capable of loading Facebook and even using the built in chat... but this page in particular tends to freeze quite often. This freezing seems to be related to the in browser chat. When I initiate a chat conversation with someone, it usually works just fine, but if someone tries to initiate a conversation with me, it freezes around 75% of the time. When this happens I have to do a full restart of my Kindle which takes around 45 seconds give or take.
      Additionally, any website that requires a second browsing window will not work with the kindle. So if following a link would open a new window, it will not work on the Kindle.
      The Kindle doesn't run Flash, so no videos. You can visit places like YouTube to find the title of a vid or something of similar nature, but you cannot actually watch the video.
      I absolutely love my kindle. I wouldn't trade it for a nook, ipad or anything else. For reading books and doing simple web browsing, it's perfect IMHO. The Kindle store is easy to navigate and books are much cheaper. I hope this helps.
  6. QUESTION:
    Can you use a Kindle 3G for wifi on cruise ships without paying the cruise ship's high internet access fees? D?
    Does Kindle 3G use their own satellites to make the use the ship's satellite unnecessary? Prefer to hear from someone who used this service personally and specifically looking at Holland America in the Panama Canal region. Thanks in advance!
    • ANSWER:
      No, Kindle 3G or Nook 3G from Barnes & Noble use AT&T as 3G provider thus it works the same as your mobile phone would on the cruise ship.
      If you don't have an eReader yet and only looking to get one, Nook or Nook Color from B&N is the best.
      Forget Kindle, it's so last year. Get Nook (3G or Wi-Fi) or or Nook Color (Wi-Fi) from bn.com or any Barnes & Noble physical store or BestBuy or Walmart. 3G means the internet connection is included for free for the life of the device thus you can download a new book even when you're walking on the street.   7. QUESTION:
    Is Kindle 3G network free for all web sites?
    I have read existing answers, but still confused.
    So, Kindle 3 with 3G models provides a web browser. And they say 3G internet is free. Is it restricted to the Amazon site for buying e-books? Or can I browse any web sites for free on a 3G network, for example, Google, Wikipedia , Facebook and so on.
    • ANSWER:
      You can browse internet websites such a google, wikipedia, et cetera. This feature is experimental however, meaning that amazon may cancel it if they want to. But so far there was free 3G web browsing for the past three years, ever since kindle 1 was released. Now, the web browsing itself cannot compare to an Iphone 3G web browsing experience. The web browser is slow, and the pages are not in color. It's kind of like seeing the internet as a book. After all, the Kindle is an ebook reader. The Kindle 3 Webkit web browser is very good when compared to those of the previous Kindles. Pages like the New York Times load up with full images. And it's free of charge, at least in the U.S. If you want to see how the 3G web browser works and how it compares to that one of the previous Kindle, here is a youtube video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8cOMvAHLjJw&feature=related
    What are the two holes on the side of my kindle 3g?
    there are two small slits on the left side of my kindle 3g that is about the thickness of two thumbnails and length of my pinkey. I do not kmow what these two holes are and so far i have not found a plug that fits into it.
  10. QUESTION:
    can i plug in a wireless mouse into my kindle 3G?
    i want to get a wireless mouse for my kindle 3G. So that it would be easier to navigate. Can i plug it in through the USB port? Will the mouse work if i plug it in?
    • ANSWER:
      No. It is not a normal USB port on the Kindle. Furthermore, the OS isn't geared to accept a mouse.
      The Kindle is an eReader, not a netbook or notebook.
  11. QUESTION:
    If you get 3G with a Chromebook, do you have to pay for a monthly subscription or is it set like the 3G Kindle?
    I'm still confused about the Chromebook, and I want to get one with 3G wireless. Does it come WITH 3G wireless or do I have to pay for it monthly?
    • ANSWER:
      You receive free 3G from Verizon for 2 years but it's only 100mb's a month. That isn't much but it is enough for email and documents, possibly the occasional facebook. There will be people who will try and survive on this measly 100 megs by visiting the mobile version of sites. To be able to use the free 3G you will need to have a credit card on file, just in case you decide to spring for another plan. Those other plans are: .99 for unlimited internetz for the day or .99 for 1gb of internetz for the month. If it was up to me, I'd get a chromebook. They look pretty cool. But that's just because I already use Google's services on a daily basis like gmail, google docs, sites, voice, etc.
  12. QUESTION:
    I'm Canadian with a 3G Kindle 3, if I take it to Dominican Republic, will I incur roaming charges while on 3G?
    I'm going on vacation in the south to Dominican Republic later on in 2011 and plan to take my Kindle 3.
    - Can I use 3G while there?
    - If so, is there additional charges?
    • ANSWER:
      Since 3G is a mobile internet connection provided by AT&T (in the U.S.) The answer is YES you will incur in roaming charges. However most resorts and hotels (assuming you'll be staying in such accommodations) have wifi hotspots free of charge, also most shopping malls and restaurants provide complimentary wifi access so you should have no problem finding a hotspot wherever you move.
      This is on amazon's official description:
      "For U.S. customers traveling abroad, additional charges apply for wireless delivery of periodical subscriptions. For details, click here. To avoid any charges, you can always download items via your computer and transfer them to your Kindle using USB or a Wi-Fi connection."
      I would assume same applies for canadian customers.
      Hope this helps! :)
  13. QUESTION:
    I have a question about the 3G kindle and wifi kindle?
    Okay so many people are telling me to go with the 3G one because it comes in handy for traveling, well this may sound like a dumb question but if I DO purchase the 3G one, can I still connect to the wifi at my house? Or if you get the 3G can you not connect to wifi?
    Thanks!
    • ANSWER:
      You will definitely still be able to use Wi-Fi at home or where ever. The Kindle will recognize when you're in range of your Wi-Fi network and use it instead of the 3G. Remember that the 3G is only used for buying books and not other Internet functions.
      CORRECTION: You CAN use 3G for the "experimental" web browser in the US (but not internationally).
  14. QUESTION:
    What are your thoughts of the Kindle having 3G?
    Personally, I think its a waste of 3G. Dont you think more useful devices should have 3G before it? I mean, all you can do on a Kindle is read books. Shouldnt it be used for other devices first?
    • ANSWER:
      It's not so much a question of what devices deserve 3G. It's an offer made by Amazon to you. Amazon is willing to provide 3G service to you for no charge if you're willing to buy their Kindle 3G from them for 9. They hope that you will use the 3G to buy books, enjoying the convenience, and increasing their sales. Nothing nefarious or out-of-order is in play here.
  15. QUESTION:
    Can you go on the Internet with the Amazon Kindle 3G+Wi-Fi?
    I'm planning to buy the amazon kindle 3G +Wi-Fi costing 4. I was wondering if I can go on the Internet with it. For example, will I be able to go on my gmail account wherever there is WiFi? I would also appreciate it you could explain any other features regarding the type of kindle i'm going to buy. Plz help!! Thxx
    • ANSWER:
      Yes, you can do internet browsing on the Kindle.
      But it's a miserable browsing experience. It's slow, navigation is clunky. You often have to zoom on portions of pages to read them. It does no video, audio or animations.
      Honestly, make your purchasing decision solely upon the fact that the Kindle is an eReader. You will be disappointed in any other functionality it has.
  16. QUESTION:
    Do I have the Kindle 3G or the Kindle Wifi?
    I recently bought a kindle through craigslist and the woman advertised it as the 3G version. But I can't figure out how to turn on 3G... And I can't check the back for a model number because it has a skull skin on it. How do I tell if its the 3G version or if its only the wifi version?
    • ANSWER:
      Another way to check.
      From the home page, click Menu and then choose settings.
      Look for the paragraph labeled "Device Info"
      The last line in that paragraph reads "Network Capability: "Wi-fi and 3G" if it is 3G enable. If only "Wi-Fi" it is not 3G.
  17. QUESTION:
    Do I have to pay for monthly 3G on a Kindle 3?
    I am thinking of buying the kindle 3. I was wondering if I have to pay for the 3G on it monthly, or just when I buy it? If I only want to buy books using the 3G, not surf Internet, do I need to pay monthly?
    • ANSWER:
      Tony obviously does not have a 3G Kindle. I've had one for 4 months.
      There is no monthly fee or data charges for using the 3G on the Kindle. Amazon picks up the tab.
      Web browsing on the Kindle is not very satisfying. It's slow and tedious to navigate using arrow keys. Because of that, Amazon knows folks won't really be doing much web surfing, and will be using the 3G for buying of books.
      Furthermore, the product description on the Amazon site says "Free 3G Wireless – No monthly payments, no annual contracts."
  18. QUESTION:
    On Amazon Kindle 3G, can you update your facebook status and send emails while browsing the web?
    Whispernet/3G for Kindle: How does it work and does it cost anything?
    I'm thinking about getting a kindle, but I want to know what the situation is with Amazon's Whispernet? Does it cost anything to use and how exactly does it work? I just want to know if I'm going to have to pay a monthly rate for it or something.
    • ANSWER:
      When you get a kindle, you get a Kindle Email address (~~~@kindle.com) - When you email something to this address, it gets sent to your kindle.
      If you have the WiFi Only version or the 3G/WiFi version with 3G off, then it's free.
      If it transfers over AT&T's network on the 3G version, it costs 15 cents per megabyte.
      If you want, when you get your Kindle, in your My Kindle page, you can set your Kindle delivery limit to 0.00 so you are guaranteed to never get billed, but files will definitely not be sent via Kindle's 3G connectivity if you have the more expensive Kindle.
  24. QUESTION:
    What is the difference between kindle wireless and the kindle 3G?
    I looked at amazon and there really isn't a difference besides one is 139 and the other is 189. They are both black, have free internet and the screen is the same size I want to get it for my husband as a birthday gift. I have never used one so I am a little lost..help!
    • ANSWER:
      To clarify, 3G is the same network a cell phone would use. So anywhere you have cell phone reception, your kindle would work.
      Wireless is the internet a computer typically uses.
      Short answer - 3G is more accessible anywhere because of the cellular style reception.
      You can consider buying a kindle through http://pungle.org if you want to see a charity earn some extra money. (doesn't cost you anything extra)
      The 3G version can utilize AT&T 3G Cellular data network to shop and download books. So you aren't restricted to a wi-fi hot spot, you can download from virtually anywhere.
      It's up to you whether that convenience is worth the
  26. QUESTION:
    What is the difference between a Kindle and a Kindle 3G?
    As far as I can see it is only the price. Could someone please tell me what the difference is.
    • ANSWER:
      I think one is wi-fi and the more expensive one is wi-fi + 3g. Meaning the wi-fi one can only connect online if you have a wireless internet connection, whilst the 3g one allows you to connect anywhere as long as you have 3g from your phone carrier.
      so in short,
      wi-fi - internet connection from a wireless router.
      wi-fi + 3G - internet connection from wireless router + internet connection from 3G network carrier.
  27. QUESTION:
    What exactly is kindle's 3g facility? Can we access other websites for free using that?
    http://www.amazon.com/Kindle-Wireless-Reader-3G-Wifi-Graphite/dp/B002FQJT3Q
    Above is the link for Kindle ebook reader.
    It says about a 3g facility that is free. Do they mean that it works only for entering Amazon website or can it access any website from anywhere and download books?
    Thank you.
    • ANSWER:
      You can use the basic web browser to browse web sites using the 3G service. No fees, No data plans.
      Something you need to know about browsing on the Kindle. It's not a very satisfactory browsing experience, 3G or wi-fi. It's slow. Navigation is clunky using arrow keys to move cursors. You often have to zoom on sections of a page to read it. And it doesn't do any video or audio.
      And of course, you can shop and download eBooks on Amazon.
  28. QUESTION:
    Can you really get 3G internet anywhere for free on the Kindle 3G? If so what's the coverage area?
    Want to know if you have to pay anything for the 3G? If not How do they make money?
    • ANSWER:
      Yes, the 3g internet is completely free with no wireless monthly costs, as long as you have a 3g model like this one:
      http://www.syncpedia.com/goto/kindle_3g
      There is a non-3g model which is cheaper but the free 3g is so worth it in my opinion:
      http://www.syncpedia.com/goto/kindle_special
      I use my kindle to read blogs, news, check facebook, check email.. I love it!
      As far as coverage goes, the coverage seems to be great. Most cells phone work poorly in my home but I can always use my kindle.
      Amazon makes money when people buy ebooks from them - so I think they feel that providing the free 3g will allow people to buy books anywhere so is worth the cost to them.
      So I just try to buy some books too in addition to using the web, so they keep paying the wireless bill :).
      The kindle is great so I would recommend it.
  29. QUESTION:
    Should I get an Amazon Kindle 3G or a Barnes & Noble NOOKcolor?
    i really like the 3g and long battery life of the kindle, but i also really want a touchscreen, like on the nook, except it doesn't have 3g. which one would you pick?
    • ANSWER:
      If I were making this decision today, I'd ask myself, how much of my reading involves color?
      My answer would be nearly none of it. All of it is black text on a white background.
      So why spend nearly twice the price for capability I won't be using, and dramatically shorter battery life?
  30. QUESTION:
    Is 3G for Kindle worth the extra cost?
    I'm trying to decide between Kindle WiFi and Kindle 3G + WiFi and global wireless. It's about .00 more for the extra features. I don't do a lot of international traveling, so the second feature isn't very important to me. However, does having 3G really enhance the Kindle? Also, how necessary is the two year extended warranty?
    • ANSWER:
      @ Cherry Bomb, though I'm a book lover, I get to disagree with you. The new Kindle can last for one month on a single charge, while many mobile phone (like iPhone) can last no more than one day. Is it really likely to get the Kindle out of battery?
      And even though I love actual books, I've to accept the fact that ebook will become more and more popular because it is so much convenient, eco-friendly, and we can get dictionary, annotations, highlights, read aloud to us, all with a device without bringing another dictionary or pen or audio book. We can put thousands of favorite books in one, instead of bringing tiles of heavy books. It's a trend, we need to accept and live with it, otherwise even ourselves with get sunk in the wave and get lost in the society.
      I miss the past time when I write and send letter with paper, but now I accept and enjoy the convenience brought to me by email. I miss the days I listen to music from cassette, but now I accept to listen music in MP3. Does cassette company closed down? Yes if they do not do other things in demand to catch up the trend. So newspapers, magazines, even though people read things from internet, many news still come from newspapers' website and if they are smart enough and do well, they can earn even more money from web advertisement on their website (you know this is the major income source of facebook). That's the future trend, don't pull people stay with you, everyone get to move :D
      Here is another die-hard book lover, you can see how she says about the Kindle:
      http://www.amazon.com/gp/redirect.html?ie=UTF8&location=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.com%2Freview%2FR9J54TZ1541OR%3Fie%3DUTF8%26ref%255F%3Dcm%255Fcr%255Frdp%255Fperm&tag=more_info-20&linkCode=ur2&camp=1789&creative=390957
      Ok, enough for these. So I love my Kindle very much. If you're thinking about getting the Kindle, I'll say get it and you won't regret, and I prefer the 3G version. Right now I've read over 10 books with the Kindle, and I really like the idea that I can bring and store all the books with the handy device. Besides, it uses the e-ink technology, it is really clear like reading books; and even I read with the device for long hours, I don't feel tired. The internet browsing comes handy as well when I want to look for information on some specific area. My only complaint is the white case, the Kindle is only sold in white at the time when I got it, but now the new Kindle has graphite case which looks much better ;)
      And there are some websites, where you can find more than a million of free books for the Kindle, so that's why you no longer need to get to library, you can actually own these books:
      http://www.amazon.com/gp/b/?node=2245146011&tag=more_info-20
      If you need to read PDF with charts and graphics, you may want to go for the larger Kindle DX (both the new Kindle and the new Kindle DX are now at a cheaper price and with better contrast). Read this review and you should be able to decide which one to get:
      http://www.amazon.com/gp/redirect.html?ie=UTF8&location=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.com%2Freview%2FR23V08M2LNB81I%3Fie%3DUTF8%26ASIN%3DB0015TCML0%26nodeID%3D%26ref%255F%3Dcm%255Fcr%255Fpr%255Fcmt&tag=more_info-20&linkCode=ur2&camp=1789&creative=390957
      Hope this helps.
    Getting a kindle but no 3G, can I connect it right to the computer?
    We really want to get a Kindle from my grandmother for Christmas but she doesn't have Wi-Fi. We can't afford the 3G. Can she plug it into her computer to download books? Or would she need to find a Hot Spot to get anything on it?
    • ANSWER:
      Hiya,
      I bought the one with Wifi a few weeks ago and i really feel ive done the right thing. Kindle comes with built in wifi only so that you'll be able to buy'n'download ebooks from Amazon. The 3G is to browse internet through it's web browser, and trust me it's not worh it. I mean kindle's not really the thing to browse the web.It's got a very little internal memory so if you overload it (which many of us can't help doing it) it'll go blank and inorder to make it work again you've got to dump it's whole internal memory and not to mention this erases all your bookmarks,personal info,notes...and in short everything.So I say Wifi is enough. And Of course she can plug it into her pc and store books
  33. QUESTION:
    Can anyone advise on the coverage world wide of the Kindle 3G Wi-Fi?
    In particular the Egyptian Red Sea area. I would like to download a daily newspaper when I go on holiday. Unfortunately the online Kindle information on the coverage area is not definitive enough.
      3G is cellular, wifi is 802.11, they're two totally separate things. Wifi coverage is wherever someone has an internet connection and a wireless router.
  34. QUESTION:
    I am really looking into buyint a Kindle 3G with WiFi. I was wondering what people though of it?
    Also, will I actually be able to browse the internet or will I only be able to buy books on it? Thanks everyone!
    • ANSWER:
      I've had the 3G Kindle for about 5 months now. It has become my primary way of reading.
      The Kindle can browse the internet, but truth be told, it's a poor browsing experience. It's slow. Navigation is tedious using arrow keys to move the cursor around, and the page displays in full, making it hard to read unless you zoom in on parts.
      Truly, Kindle makes a fantastic eReader, but don't buy it expecting to do much else well.
      No. Amazon sells it as free 3G for life.
    What is 3G Wireless when talking about Kindle?
    I am looking at buying a Kindle. I am mostly very stupid when it comes to technological terms. It seems to me that the 139$ Kindle is only different from the 9 Kindle because the 9 Kindle has "Free 3G Wireless." What does this mean? Is it worth the extra 50$? Thanks!
  38. QUESTION:
    What is the difference between Kindle 3g and Wifi? Is 3G worth it?
    Does the wifi Password have to be unlocked?
    • ANSWER:
      3G works using cellular telephone towers just like your cell phone. It is somewhat slower than Wi-Fi but it is available anywhere you can get a cell phone signal. Note that not all cell locations support 3G and many only support the old format (GPRS) Which is only as fast as a 28.8K dial up modem. Your device will automatically slow itself down to use that technology if there is nothing better available.
      WiFi uses local routers to get onto the internet, for public places such as coffee shops you will not need a password. For private WiFi you will most likely need the password to use it (so you cant just attach to anyone's internet feed).
  39. QUESTION:
  41. QUESTION:
    What is 3g to a third generation Kindle?
    I'm thinking about buying the 3rd generation Kindle. But first I want to know what 3g is. I'm not very tech-savvy so if you can dumb down your answer as much as possible that would be awesome :)
    • ANSWER:
      Basically you can either get the wifi only kindle or the 3g kindle.
      The 3g kindle you can use the wireless anywhere for free since it uses cell phone data (with no monthly fees), whereas with the wifi kindle you can only use the network features (store & web browser) when in a wifi hotspot.
      Another tip, you can get a good deal on a kindle and compare the different models here:
      http://www.syncpedia.com/goto/kindle_store
      You might consider a 3g kindle if your not a computer geek since it's easier to setup. The networking "just works" on the 3g model, vs having to setup your own wireless connection at home with the basic wifi kindle. The other thing about the 3g kindle is that if your an internet addict it is great since you can use the web browser anywhere for free, which is a crazy deal that cell phone companies usually charge + dollars a month for.
      The only other choice you need to decide is if you want the "special offers" discount on either the wifi or 3g kindle. Basically, if you get a "special offer" version it just means you get off and then have to put up with some smalls ads on the screensaver & menu, but not the ebooks.
      I have a regular 3g kindle that I purchased before the special offer version was offered, but might have considered the discount now since I understand it's not very noticeable.
  42. QUESTION:
    Do i really NEED 3G for Amazon Kindle?
    I've been wanting to buy one since i got a job (YAY :P) but here's my big confusion: there's the option of just wi-fi, or 50 bucks more and it has 3G, which I don't understand. What's the big difference? Why would I need it? If it's something where I'm likely to buy from the kindle store WHILE at home with my home connection, should I just opt for the wi-fi only? Thanks bunches to any 3G brains who can tell me what's up.
    • ANSWER:
      If you want to buy books when you are out of home, then 3g is useful. It depends, for me 50 bucks is one time investment for 3G , which i think is good bang for buck. But it all comes down to if you would need 3G.
  43. QUESTION:
    Question for Amazon Kindle wifi+3g (last generation) owners?
    I am about to order a kindle 3g but i have a question concerning the use of the Internet. Is it possible to visit all the websites using 3g? Or 3g usage is limited to downloading books only? Maybe there is a list of websites that are allowed to be visited?
    Thank you
    • ANSWER:
      Forget Kindle, get Nook Color.
      - Nook allows to lend books for 2 weeks to friends or to your other devices that run B&N app. Barnes & Noble allows (when you walk in with the Nook to B&N store) to read any available eBook for free while in the store via free provided in the store Wi-Fi. With Nook, while in BN store you get exclusive articles from top authors, and great offers including cafe treats and unique deals.
      - Nook Color is better as a color e-Reader than Kindle simply because it has color and Kindle is black and white. Content that greatly benefits from color - such as kids books and magazines - looks much better and sharper on Nook Color's screen. Nook Color is better as an e-Reader in general than iPad. It has a new generation screen which is anti-glare coated and is better performing in sunlight than iPad's. Also, as it's smaller in size than iPad, the text appears sharper on Nook's screen. Also it has 12,000 (more soon) kids books that are built as a game with feedback.
      Overall, Nook Color is more than e-Reader as you can also watch video and use Android applications on it. It's a hybrid device, much more than just an e-Reader but not a full tablet as it doesn't have a camera. If all you want is to read novels, Kindle (or the original e-Ink Nook) might be better for you. If you want something more from your device at half of the price of iPad or Galaxy tab, then Nook Color is your best bet.
      - Nook (unlike Kindle) can be used for library ebooks.
      - Nook (unlike Kindle) can be used for renting text-ebooks.
  47. QUESTION:
    Amazon Kindle: So what's the difference between the 3G one and the other one?
    I want to get one but I noticed the one I'm planning on getting doesn't have 3G and the other one which is higer does. What is the difference? Does the one without not save the futherest location you read or something like that? I have Kindle on my PC and it does that. If you have wifi in your house do you need the 3G one? I'm a bit confused by it.
    • ANSWER:
      They both save your place in the book.
      The wifi version needs a wireless connection to work. The 3G one uses a wireless phone connection for data.
      >If you have wifi in your house do you need the 3G one<
      No, but then if you are away from your house, you will have no connection unless you can find an open wireless network.
      The Kindle uses one of the connection types to download new content or to synch your location in a book. The lack of a connection though will not keep you from reading a book you have already down loaded.
    • ANSWER:
      Read actual books! Because, what if you run out of battery, will you just have to stop reading? With actual books, you can read for however long you want. And what if something goes wrong with the Kindle, like it breaks or something? With actual books, you can't "break" a book, you can tear a page but you can just tape it back.
      Books are meant to be read on paper, not a screen. That's how it always has been until the invention of e-books which are silly. Don't we people get enough screens and buttons in our lives? Why must we read books on screens, that's like the only thing left that people read on paper. Hell, even newspapers are starting to go down because people read the news on their computers.
      It doesn't count to read a book on a screen and call yourself an avid reader. I think it would be sad to see books totally die out so please, can you help keep books alive by not buying an e-book? Please?
      "Aside from the benefit of its size and weight, the Kindle is a manufactured product, which means that the Kindle not only takes up natural resources to produce the end product, but that the Kindle is made with human hands, Chinese hands to be more specific. Is the Kindle a fair-trade product? Were the hands that produced this luxury for Americans treated justly, humanely and respectfully? Were they given a fair price for the work done, a safe environment to work in, fair labor hours? Are the people who labor over our products treated well? What of the cost of transporting thousands of Kindles from Asia to America? What of the cost of packaging and delivering the same product into the hands of the consumers once in America?
      While it’s true that most everything we do requires energy consumption, one must take into consideration the things behind the scenes. For example, one can download a book from Amazon in 60 seconds flat. How does that book get from Amazon’s library to your Kindle? By their Whispernet technology, a wireless coverage in all 50 states… just think of all that energy expended to supply Kindle followers of unlimited entertainment. Or how about the battery installed in each Kindle? Amazon thoughtfully installed a rechargeable battery, but one must use power to recharge that said battery. Where does that electricity come from?"
    Does the Kindle 3G work everywhere?
    I've been looking into buying a Kindle and the 3G says it works everywhere and another website says it works like a cell phone. I'm just trying to understand this clearly, so does the internet on the Kindle work everywhere just like a cellphone? And if it does, do you have to pay continuously for it, or just when you buy it?
    So you can't browse the web without wifi?
